RK Brings Back the 80s with Billy Idol

Monday, March 9th, 2009

So he’s a legend of the 80’s punk rock scene but at 53 he is still far gone from retirement. Although he was around in his native England since the 70’s Idol became famiar to U.S. audiences with the release of the smashing hit “Dancing With Myself.” Another catapulting factor to his fame in the 80’s was the song “White Wedding.” But it was the packaging of the songs and the daring videos that accompanied that allowed him to make a foray in America.

As popularity rose in the US, Billy Idol released a second album, Rebel Yell in 1983 and this marked an all time high establishing him as a rockstar in the United States. Songs like “Eyes Without a Face”, “Flesh For Fantasy” became popular not only in Europe but also across the big pond.

As for style and substance, Idol admits that “The Doors” were really an influential model and inspiration in his career. In fact, he was asked to take part in the new movie “The Doors”, directed by Oliver Stone. Apparently, since he was recovering from a motorcycle accident he could barely walk and his cameo in the movie was cut out.

In 2001, Billy Idol released his “Greatest Hits” including hits such as Mony Mony, Dancing with Myself, White Wedding, Rebel Yell, Eyes Without a Face, etc. Back in January, music TV channel VH1 recognized the song “Rebel Yell” as one of its 100 greatest hard rock songs taking the 79th place in the ranking.

Alright, so we’ve got tons of Billy Idol’s greatest hits for you to sing and share with friends. Get on the groove and start singing now! As always, drop us a line with your comments.

David Bowie’s career trajectory has evolved from psychedelic folk to glam rock in the late 60s and early 70s. By the mid 70s he had adopted a new style that of a soul and R&B artist. In the late 70’s, Bowie moved to Berlin and began adopting some of the style and music of Krautrock sound of Kraftwerk and Neu! and the minimalist work of Steve Reich. As for the 80s, Bowie made the leap to pop super stardom. In 1993, Bowie launched the worldwide famous production “Let’s Dance.” The title track went to #1 in the United States and United Kingdom. Let’s Dance album also featured the singles “Modern Love” and “China Girl” which were also blockbusters in the US, UK and Europe.

Beck: A Multidimensional Artist

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Bek David Campbell a.k.a. Beck is an American musician, songwriter/singer and multi-instrumentalist that captures the quintessential characteristics of a multifaceted fusion of styles and instrumentation. But his real rise to stardom Two of Beck’s were accomplished with the release of Odelay (1996) and Sea Change (2002). In fact, Odelay was awarded Album of the Year by US magazine Rolling Stone and by UK publications NME and Mojo. In addition, Odelay also received a Grammy nomination for Best Album.

In his career, the 38 year-old Beck admits to have been influenced by the music and styles of The Cars, Bob Dylan, Mantronix, Gary Wilson, Bruce Haack, the Beastie Boys, Pussy Galore, Willie Dixon, Bill Broonzy, Daniel Johnston, and Sonic Youth. This eclectic combination pretty much tell us Beck’s adoption of a particular and unique style highlighted by a collage of unorthodox music, oblique and ironic lyrics, and postmodern arrangements that include drum machines, live instrumentation and sound effects. Overall, alternative meets indie kind of style.

“Modern Guilt”, his most recent production was released last summer and quicky rose to the top of the charts in both the Billboard 200 and the Canadian Albums Chart at number four. This same album was nominated for Best Alternative Album at the 51st Grammy Awards in December 2008. Currently, Beck is on tour and will be in concert at Zepp Sendai, Japan on March 18. He’s also scheduled to play in Europe over the summer. So far, it has been confirmed that he’ll have a headline concert at La Riviera in Madrid on July 9th. Alright, so if you can’t wait to see Beck in concert in an arena near you you’re more than welcome to sing to his music. We’ve got some new Beck tracks for you to grab the mic and put together your best act. Ciao for now!

Rihanna and Chris Brown…Back Together Again?

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Wait a minute…Rihanna and Chris Brown are back together again? It has not been a month yet since the R&B singer allegedly assaulted his pop star girlfriend. No way! I don’t buy it! Well, my friends WAY!People.com has reported that 19-year-old Chris and the 21-year-old Umbrella singer are currently spending time together at one of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ homes in Miami, Florida.

“They’re together again. They care for each other,” a source told the website. “While Chris is reflective and saddened about what happened, he is really happy to be with the woman he loves.”

Is perhaps reconciliation a tactic before Chris Brown heads back to L.A. to make a court appearance? I don’t know. What I do know is that sometimes Love Hurts as our friends of Nazareth used to sing. Hopefully, for both of them this is for real. It’s time to bring closure to the dramady and to move on with their lives. Now it’s time for you for a chillaxin’ karaoke singing session with Rihanna and Chris Brown. Drop us your comments and let us know your thoughts on the Rihanna-Chris Brown drama.

Estelle feat. Kanye West Karaoke Debut

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Alright, so the Brit Estelle made a name for herself with that urban anthem titled "American Boy" featuring our very own Kanye West. But let's not forget that the 29-year old Brit is also a Grammy Award winning R&B singer, rapper and producer. And in her native UK, she was the recipient of a MOBO (Music of Black Origin) award for 'Best Newcomer' and received three consecutive 'Best Female Artist' trophies from the UK Hip-Hop Awards.

But, it was not until 2008 that she made her mark in America and around the world with the smashing hit "American Boy". In fact, Estelle went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "American Boy" with Kanye West at the 2009 Grammy Awards. This song was #7 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008. After "American Boy", Estelle released "Shine" which made it to number 6 in the UK. In Britain, the single sold enought copies to go gold.

Estelle who now resides in New York city actually went straight to become number one with American Boy and in the process displacing Welsh singer Duffy's five-week reign at the top of the charts. That was in fact quite a rally. As for what is she up to now, last week she was actually involved with the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week before embarking upon a tour across America. From Vancouver, to Atlanta, Estelle is on the road with the "Evolver" tour and opening for John Legend.

So, at Red Karaoke, we are excited to share with you Estelle's hit "American Boy" feat. Kanye West. Grab the mic and chill to the music of Estelle now!
