Default Re: Karaoke bars(Your Experiences At Live "Public" Karaoke Shows)

I thought I'd try to revise and revive this thread out of a general curiosity about how karaoke shows differ both in the US and around the world.
I'll start off by saying I have been attending k-shows since about 1990, when they first came to my state (Iowa) in the US. Nowadays it seems that most shows are run with a computer rather than a disc player, altho some still keep a disc player on hand (bless them for that!) to allow singers to use their own discs when the computer system doesn't have a song they want to sing.

But what is really striking, and probably becoming the future of the live k-show, is something I ran into recently at a local show. Namely, that not only were all the songs on a computer system, but the show had NO SONGBOOKS! So the singers would have to just give the KJ a song request slip for their turn to sing that had the names of the song and the artist which the KJ used to look up and load the song on his computer. I must admit they seemed to have a very big song library, tho there's no way to know without a book or getting a figure from the KJ, but I would think this system would be very frustrating for a karaoke newbie singer, esp. one who wasn't very knowledgeable about songs and artists.

At the same time I'm sure this is less trouble for the KJ and also less costly not printing up songbooks. The KJ said they got most of their songs thru a song-sharing subscription service (sounded a lot like Napster to me, lol, and probably very illegal), but I guess I don't care that much myself since my wife and I pretty much sang from my discs, for which the KJ would just load and burn the song from my disc, then play it on his computer system.

I'm very curious to hear the thoughts from others as I'm not sure if I'll go back to this show much except for it's convenience location-wise.
